2008 Eastern States

New York City schools move another step closer in competing with the top level high school programs in NYS.  The Eastern States Classic is a national premier event that annually attracts over 60 high schools from six states.  This one had 67!

NYS rules allow each individual wrestler an opportunity for a school to send their top wrestlers to these types of events rather than the entire team.

In a program that is developing quite rapidly with more and more wrestlers and teams each year, the new rule change will be helpful to the mission of expanding wrestling in New York City.

Wrestlers grow and mature quite differently in  adolescence with some maturing more quickly than others.  We want all of them to be able to compete at the level they are physically and psychologically ready for as the program expands with more and more opportunities.

Over the weekend, 6 wrestlers became ready to compete at the highest level in New York State.

In training kids, many coaches use this milestone as an opportunity to motivate these types of kids.  After receiving their "bronze medals" a short question would be asked by the coach.  "Do you want to turn that Bronze to GOLD?"  Naturally what competitor who just took a bronze medal would not want a gold medal!  In education, it is referred to "as a teachable moment".  A great time to "tug" the hook that trained professional coaches wait for with every kid in their room.

That opportunity is becoming a reality in New York City more quickly that many of us ever imagined while planning the Beat the Streets Wrestling Program!  It is all about "repetitions, repetitions and more repetitions and time management.

The 6th wrestler was Matt Goldberg, Brooklyn Poly Prep who went 3-2 at the tournament.  He drew the New York State runner-up in the first round and was up 4-2  and lost a close one.  He wrestled back and won 3 matches losing to the 3rd place finisher and was eliminated.  He wrestled very well and displayed high level technique.  His goal is within reach of winning the National High School Prep Championships at Lehigh University in March.

Matt attended the John Smith wrestling camp and Coach Smith would have been proud.  He took Population down twice with the Low Single!
