This Saturday, February 2, the Beat the Streets middle school wrestlers will compete at the historic 369th Harlem Armory Center in Manhattan. In so doing, they will become part of the rich tradition inherent in this historic building.
The Harlem Armory originally was home to the famous highly decorated African-American World War II fighting unit called the "Harlem Hell Fighters." The building has since been renovated by Goldman Architects into a state-of-the-art community sports center that services the youth of the Harlem area. The center is a mecca for the new minority tennis initiatives that have originated in this area, as well as other sports, recreation, and homework support for the urban community.
How fitting it is for the Beat the Streets youth wrestlers to be competing in this culturally-rich pavilion in February, during Black History month? Beat the Streets wrestling has its roots in providing wrestling opportunities for kids in predominately urban areas. BTS Executive Director Mike Cigala, designer of the BTS Wrestling Day at the Armory, is proud to be a part of this historic and educational event.
The Beat the Streets Wrestling Day event is being held in the midst of The New York City Mayor's Cup-a championship wrestling tournament consisting of all NYC public, private, and Catholic high schools. Wrestling Day is open to any BTS wrestler or BTS program within NYC. It will start at 1:00pm and run until 5:00pm .
Anyone who is interested in participating can call 212-497-2800 or 718-350-1034 for more information and reservations.
Beat the Streets wrestling, changing the NYC wrestling culture every day in every way.
