Thirty Five New York City Wrestlers will participate in the 2008 New York State HS Wrestling Championships in Rochester on Friday and Saturday. Thirty PSAL Champions and 5 CHSAA Champions will be a part of the field of 240 wrestlers from all 13 Sections throughout New York State.
New York State conducts its Championships as an Intersectional Tournament and not specifically as a true State Championships. Each wrestler represents its Section and wears the uniform of the section.
Last year it expanded for the first time in 44 years allowing three wildcards in each weight class to fill the 16 man brackets. Five of the Champions last year were wildcard entries.
Wildcards are selected by the results of statewide competition during the season. The competition allows for full wrestle backs and the top 6 in each weight class are recognized as All- State wrestlers.
The PSAL and the CHSAA are not members of the NYSPHSAA but are invited to participate in the Federation Tournament and receive awards in a separate ceremony.
Section Five (Rochester) and the two Long Island Section 8 (Nassau County) and Section 11 (Section 11) usually dominate the state tournament having won 31 of the 43 state tournaments since 1963.
Many of the New York City wrestlers have state experience from last year and their results from several intersectional competitions during the year have been very promising.
Matt Cartusciello (Petrides HS) and Peter Morales (Grand St. Campus) have done exceptionally well this season and have a very good chance of becoming the first PSAL Champion since they entered the state tournament in 1973.
Connor Hanafee (Monsignor Farrell HS) has also competed very well throughout the season and has an excellent chance as well.
